Three elements that help the 2023 Mazda MX-30 electric vehicle stand out from its competitors

Electric vehicles have been rapidly growing in popularity, availability, and consumer interest over the last 12 months. Multiple new EVs have arrived on the market with Mazda launching the brand-new 2023 Mazda MX-30 in 2022. The Mazda MX-30 is a different kind of electric vehicle, a vehicle that focuses just as much on driving pleasure and daily comfort and usability as it does on electric efficiency. Moreover, the MX-30 features a smaller battery that is faster to charge and provides a better balance because of its lower weight that doesn't have as much of an impact on driving dynamics compared to larger batteries. On the other hand, the MX-30 gives you the range that you need to complete all of your daily trips, but you don't have to sit around for hours waiting for it to charge.

There is no question that the MX-30 is different from other electric vehicles; what matters is whether or not they can meet your needs. With that in mind, we take a look at three ways the new Mazda MX-30 stands out from its main rivals in the electric vehicle segment.

A lot faster to charge

Mazda engineers focused not on specs and what the on-paper story of the MX-30 looks like, but what consumers actually need from their electric vehicle. Mazda, therefore, focused on implementing a smaller battery that would be faster to charge. The 35.5 kWh battery that powers the Mazda MX-30 can be charged in just 36 minutes from 20% to 80% with a Level 3 DC charger with a 50-kW output. At home, the MX-30 can charge in just two hours and 50 minutes, while its competitors usually require over nine hours and sometimes a lot more. Moreover, the MX-30 can charge on a Level 1 120V outlet in just 13 hours and 40 minutes.

When you compare with other electric vehicles, you realize that the MX-30 is the fastest charging electric vehicle in its class. For starters, the ability to charge at 50-kW and get 80% range in 36 minutes is very important because most fast chargers in Québec are 50 kW. If you charge a larger battery on a 50-kW charger, it can take easily over an hour and 30 minutes. That means that other electric vehicles need to hope that a 100-kW or 150-kW charger is available, or they will be waiting a long time. The MX-30 gets you back on the road in about 30 minutes with a lot of range available.

In simple terms, Mazda engineers took inspiration from gas-powered vehicles when determining what kind of battery to put in the MX-30. With a gas vehicle, you don't really worry about range because you know that filling up the gas tank is quick and easy. The same can be said for the MX-30. When you can charge in under three hours at home or 36 minutes on a widely available fast charger, range becomes significantly less of a consideration.

The range you need

We started with the charging capability of the MX-30 before jumping into range. The all-electric range of the 2023 Mazda MX-30 is rated at 161 km, which is undoubtedly less than other electric vehicles it competes with. However, as we stated previously, the fact that you can charge your MX-30 on a 50-kW charger quickly or in under three hours at home makes the range less of a consideration.

Moreover, ask yourself how many times you actually drive over 150 km in a given day. Most electric vehicle owners will use their EV to get to work and back, and the MX-30 delivers more than enough range for that. And if you want to go further distances, it won't take you that much longer in the MX-30 because you can charge a lot faster than other electric vehicles. In other words, you're not compromising actual usability when you choose the 2023 Mazda MX-30.

Impressive value

The last point we want to mention is pricing. The 2023 Mazda MX-30 comes in two versions starting at $42,650, while the top-of-the-line MX-30 GT starts at $47,650 before rebates. In other words, if you apply the maximum rebate of $12,000 available on the MX-30, you are paying significantly less than other electric vehicles on the market. That said, you are not sacrificing features as even the base MX-30 gets an 8.8-inch full-color display, a wide range of advanced driver assistance features, Mazda connected services that provide remote access to your Mazda through a mobile app, satellite radio, a navigation system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and even a heated steering wheel. You won't find other electric vehicles that give you this much for such an affordable starting price. Upgrade to the GT, and you get a power moonroof, adaptive front lighting system, 360° view monitor, a Bose premium sound system with 12 speakers, 10-way power-adjustable driver seats, and more. There's even a multitone paint option.

In conclusion, the 2023 Mazda MX-30 delivers remarkable range, features, charging capability, and value while also giving you the range you need. And with 200 pound-feet of torque under your right foot, and a battery that is significantly less heavy than other EVs, you also get plenty of performance and impressive agility and handling.
