The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Earns the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ Award

The all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV and CX-90 PHEV have both been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ award, the highest honor delivered by the IIHS, due to their outstanding performance in terms of active and passive safety.

Passive safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a non-governmental body that tests each new vehicle on the market in North America to determine the level of protection they offer to their occupants as well as other road users. Of course, the main event of these tests are the physical crash tests, in which the IIHS purchases vehicles at random from a dealership’s inventory and puts them through a series of challenging tests to see how they perform in collisions often seen in the real world. These include the small and moderate overlap front tests where the vehicle’s front clips the barrier at 65 km/h, with the force of the impact localized only on either 40 or 25% of the vehicle’s frontal area. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 obtained the best-possible rating of “Good” in every frontal collision test by protecting the front seat occupants from deformation or intrusion.

Of course, side impact tests are also performed, and the IIHS has made this test much more challenging this year by adding weight and speed to the crash cart in order to replicate an impact with the kinds of heavy vehicles that are getting more and more popular on our roads. Even when being hit in the middle of the doors by a 4,200-pound vehicle traveling at 60 km/h, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 performed admirably, once again obtaining the highest possible rating for occupant protection.

Active safety

Of course, avoiding an accident altogether is always the safest option, which is why Mazda engineers have developed a host of advanced driver assistance features such as forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection. In tests performed by the IIHS, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 proved these efforts were not in vain since the various systems were able to prevent or significantly reduce the force of an impact in all tests, including those where a pedestrian jumps out in front of the vehicle. Good headlamps are also a key part of preventing accidents, and the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is again at the top of the pack, with its available LED projector headlamps being rated “Good”, the highest honour in this test.

All of this combines to protect you and your family in the unfortunate event of a crash, making the 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV and PHEV some of the safest vehicles on the road.
