2021 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2021 Volkswagen Atlas: Responsive and Refined

The CX-9 evolves for the 2021 model year with two new models and styling updates that complement the refined interior. All models feature standard AWD and a turbocharged engine that delivers response that surpasses much of the competition. Additional technologies enhance agility and safety so you can drive with more confidence and have a little more fun.

Here, we compare the 2021 Mazda CX-9 to the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas.

Enjoy more power and efficiency in the 2021 Mazda CX-9

Each CX-9 features a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine under the hood that generates up to 250 horsepower and a responsive 320 lb-ft of torque for maximum driving dynamics. The drivetrain also features a quick-shifting, six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, drive selection switch, and paddle shifters (except GS). It achieves a highway fuel efficiency rating as low as 9.1 L/100 km. However, the Atlas doesn't rate as low, with a 9.9 L/100 km rating.

Although the Atlas offers two engines in the model lineup, they are limited. A turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder version outputs 235 horsepower and up to 62 less lb-ft of torque than the CX-9. The second engine, a 3.6-litre six-cylinder, manages 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Although it has more horsepower than the CX-9, torque still falls far below. The heavier Atlas just isn't as responsive and also awards the CX-9 as the winner in fuel efficiency.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is better designed for agility

Driving a 3-row SUV doesn’t have to be boring. The CX-9 gains an edge on the Atlas with the G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) system. Featured as standard equipment on all models, GVC Plus automatically manages torque depending on steering inputs, ultimately smoothing out acceleration forces and optimizing wheel loads.

The 'Plus' part of the system applies light braking on the outside wheels as the vehicle comes out of a turn and steering wheel goes back to centre. This increases stability, especially if the vehicle has to make an emergency maneuver. It also provides better stability when the vehicle makes movements at highway speeds.

G-Vectoring Control Plus offers more and helps the CX-9 win in performance over the Atlas. However, the CX-9 offers much more to discover.
